ART TO HELP THINK THE NEW URBAN PARADIGM CLAIM URBAN THINKERS IN ALGHERO, ITALY

Saturday, 20 February. Held in Alghero, Sardinia/Italy, the last Urban Thinkers Campus in a series of 26 ended on a very positive note. After a series of high quality debates, participants acknowledged the innovative nature of their theme: The City We Need - Open for Art.

Openness, innovation and tolerance is what defined the Alghero Campus, hosted by the University of Sassari - Department of Architecture, Design and Urban Planning, in the historical center of the city, surrounded by the Mediterranean sea. Art is everywhere. Alghero embodies art and culture at its best. Alghero also reflects a spirit of dreams, creativity, innovation, a new life and a wind of change for urban futures.

What has art to do with the new urban paradigm and the new social contract embedded in The City We Need? Artists are here to give society a chance to think new ways to relate to our environment, to people and issues. Art can trigger people to think out of the box and drive them out of their comfort zone, inviting them to new experiences or thinking about what use to make perfect common sense and is challenged today. Art can make people think together to give birth to new urban futures.

Participants concluded that art is a formidable opportunity for The City We Need. Art has the power to engage people, to stimulate, invite active dialogue and foster social interaction, rather than just passive observation.

Artists, designers, architects, musicians, etc.  are essential agents of change and should become resources, facilitators, and collaborators, rather than as experts, for everyone to become city changers. They should make people dream, project and design new urban futures.

This Urban Thinkers Campus ended the urban conversation committing to contribute to Habitat III as artists, either on the dance floor, the walls and streets to celebrate and bring a wind a change for The City We Need.
