Building cities able to withstand and recover from crises.
A Resilient City is one that can withstand and recover quickly from natural or human-made disaster.  However, cities are increasingly vulnerable to multiple hazards that can hinder or derail development trajectories.   Rapid urbanization, poor quality construction, unregulated expansion of urban settlements, weak governance capacities and climate change impacts are factors increasing cities’ exposure to multiple hazards and risks.

  • Globally, 80% of the largest cities are vulnerable to severe impacts of earthquakes, and 60% are at risk from storm surges and tsunamis, and all face new impacts of climate change;
  • Only 15% of low-income countries report success in using land use planning and urban development to reduce risk, and that information is not used for investment or planning decisions;
  • There are over 30 ongoing armed conflicts underway globally and hundreds of cities and settlements heavily damaged or destroyed.
  • Between 2002 and 2011, there were 4130 disasters recorded, resulting from natural hazards around the world where 1,117,527 people perished and a minimum of US$1,195 billion was recorded in losses;
  • Between 2000 and 2010, the total natural disaster-based damage is an estimated USD 760 billion in over 170 affected cities;
