UN-Habitat Calls for Urban Youth Fund Applications

UN-Habitat announced a call for applications for the Urban Youth Fund on Tuesday. For the fifth year in a row, the Fund will for provide grants to projects led by young people aged 15-32 years who are piloting innovative approaches to employment, good urban governance, shelter, and secure tenure. Launch of I'm a City Changer in Africa at the Africities Summit

Wednesday, 05 December, Dakar, Senegal - Today the “I’m a City Changer in Africa” campaign was launched, officiating a movement of African City Changers, institutions, and people who believe in a sustainable urban future for Africa.   The institutions attending Africities 2012 took note of the “Manifesto for Cities – the Urban Future We Want,” recognizing its key messages, principal among which is the fact that cities are becoming Africa’s greatest assets for pursuing sustainable development.  These institutions committed to join forces and to participate as African City Changers in defining the Global Urban Agenda by engaging and mobilizing partners on the continent, from every walk of life towards Habitat III (the Third United Nations conference on housing and sustainable urban development to be held in 2016).  They committed to share initiatives, actions, and policies driving positive change in African cities, and to promote a positive vision of sustainable urbanization through national urban campaigns such as the Senegalese Urban Campaign entitled ‘Defar Sama Deuk’, or ‘I’m a City Changer.’

National Urban Campaign and  UN-Habitat's I'm a City Changer in Africa campaign launched

Sunday, 02 December 2012, Guediawaye, Senegal - On the eve of the Africities Summit in Dakar, Senegal became the first country in the world to initiate a National Urban Campaign and to launch UN-Habitat's I'm a City Changer in Africa campaign. Held in Guediawaye, a populous suburb of Dakar, the launch was an opportunity to rally citizens to the cause of African City Changers under the banner Defar Sama Dekk - literally meaning in the Wolof language "I Positively Change My City." The event was a vibrant rally of civil society and grass-roots organizations, governmental and professionals partners of the Senegalese Urban Forum, united towards changing their city. I’m a City Changer in Africa

The World Urban Campaign is proud to announce "I'm a City Changer in Africa," which will expand upon the current "I'm a City Changer" movement to increase engagement and collaboration in Africa in particular. The new movement will be launched at the Africities Special Session entitled "I'm a City Changer in Africa / Change ta Ville en Afrique" on Wednesday, 05 December from 4.00 to 6.00 PM. The Senegalese Campaign "Defar Sama Deuk' will be presented as the first campaign in Africa. During the session, regional partners of the World Urban Campaign (UCLGA, ENDA, IAGU, APA and AUA) will discuss the Manifesto for Cities and the particular issues to be addressed in Africa. The Africities Summit will take place in Dakar, Senegal from 04 to 08 December 2012, and its theme will be "Building Africa from its Territories: What Challenges for the Local Governments?" Urban Youth Fund grantees for 2012

On this year's World Habitat Day on October 1, 2012, UN-Habitat proudly announced the Urban Youth Fund grantees for 2012, totaling $750,000 for 41 youth-led projects in 36 countries.  These projects will contribute to the I am a City Change campaign through the impact of their work on sustainable development in cities. Veolia ES Hickory Meadows Landfill Gas-to-Energy Project

The Veolia ES Hickory Meadows Landfill, located in Hilbert, Wisconsin, is home to Veolia latest renewable landfill gas-to-energy (LFGTE) project. This project is the first in North America that brings together two of Veolia's operating companies, taking advantage of the unique synergies and broad capabilities that exist within the Veolia family. Veolia Environmental Services is the owner/operator of the landfill site, while Veolia Energy developed the project, operates the actual landfill gas-to-energy facility, and holds the power purchasing agreement for the gas production and sale back to the local utility. TAYLOR COUNTY, Ga. – Energy Development, Limited (ASX ENE), parent company of Nashville based Energy Developments, Inc. (EDI), Green Power EMC and Veolia ES Solid Waste, Inc. today announced the completion of the expansion of EDI's Landfill Gas to Electricity plant located on Veolia's Taylor County Landfill in Mauk, Georgia.
