Comunitas Brazil UTC: Who runs this place? Between the city and the citizens

In present day, it is impossible for cities to manage all problems and offer solutions to all urban issues relying only on the public power. With a little help from the internet, citizens are becoming more and more demanding when it comes to public services – the people wants transparency, accountability and, above all, quality. However, quality comes at a price that is difficult to pay for a country that is facing an unprecedented economic crisis. Thus, partnerships must be forged in order to respond to social demands and the necessity of sustainable development. The common path is to encumber citizens when it comes to improving social services. However, shared governance makes the dream of safe, inclusive and sustainable cities come true without having to pass the burden of development to their citizens.

Selected at one of 77 Urban Thinkes Campus hosts, Comunitas will host a UTC that aims to address the issue of governance. Who really runs a city? How can we better design participation forums and approaches to improve urban spaces? City managers are closer to society and working with them we can build better urban spaces that are more inclusive.
13 September 2017 is the day Comunitas has chosen to discuss new methods for shared governance in urban spaces, innovation on building partnerships and, finally yet importantly, best practices on urban governance and sustainability.

About Comunitas
Comunitas is a non-profit and non-governmental organization based in São Paulo that advocates for sustainable and cooperative development. Their main goal is to build an effective and democratic model for municipal public management – that’s where their core-project Juntos pelo Desenvolvimento Sustentável came from.
Comunitas joined the World Urban Campaign and is promoting their Urban Thinkers Campus because they believe that they can only create change on the public sphere with the help of all social actors – civil society, government and companies. The Campus is the perfect space for them to inspire people to join them in their journey towards sustainable, democratic and inclusive cities.
