UrbaMonde: 2019 Africa Community-Led Habitat Awards – Call for Submissions

Are you part of a Community-Led Habitat Project, implementing an innovative housing and urban upgrading solution in Africa? Are you a young person living in an informal settlement? Have you made a film to draw attention to your settlement and how to overcome its challenges?

We invite you to learn more about the Community-Led Habitat Awards 2019 on Slum Dweller International’s website here and to submit your projects and videos by March 31 through the collaborative online database Co-habitat.net!

What are the Community-Led Habitat Awards?

In Africa, millions are faced with insecure and inadequate housing. But around the continent, there are inspiring examples of how communities are developing innovative and affordable housing solutions and upgrading their neighbourhoods sustainably.

With the aim of increasing the visibility of these people-led housing solutions and community initiatives, and to advocate for their expansion, Slum Dwellers International (SDI) and urbaMonde are launching the first African edition of the Community-Led Habitat Awards. The Awards are run in collaboration with World Habitat and will be given in the following three categories:

  • Best Project Award: Open to all resident-led groups or grassroots organizations working on issues of habitat and the built environment. The nominated project must be already implemented and must have resulted in changes to the built environment (e.g. housing, infrastructure, public space).
  • Best Video Award: An award open to Know Your City TV teams and youth media teams affiliated to SDI federations for documentation of issues related to the built environment and urban informality.
  • Best Partnership Award: Organized communities of the urban poor are invited to nominate public authorities or government officials for best partnerships, policies, public programs, MoUs, upgrading projects/plans that demonstrate active community participation and partnership.

Why participate?

Selected projects will be invited to share their experiences at the UN-Governing Council in Nairobi (May 27-31, 2019). The winning projects will also have the chance to enter the shortlist stage of the prestigious World Habitat Awards, organized by our partner World Habitat.

Share your story to be part of a growing network of actors securing housing rights and implementing people-led habitat solutions. Gain visibility and public exposure to advocate for the expansion of community-led housing, and learn from your peers!

How to apply?

More information regarding each category is available on the SDI website. Submissions are made through the collaborative online database Co-habitat.net in English, French or Portuguese. Instructions on how to apply can be downloaded in English and French)

Deadline for Submissions: March 31, 2019.

Who are we?

The Awards are an initiative of the CoHabitat Network, a network of community-led housing organizations and allies from across the world, working together to implement housing rights through collective, non-speculative, people-led solutions. The Network was launched in 2014 (under the name of Social Production of Habitat Platform) as a loose, decentralized and project-driven collaboration between some of the major grassroots organizations and federations of urban dwellers in the field of community-led housing. Slum Dwellers International is acting as focal point for Africa within the Network.

We look forward to your submissions!
