Urban Thinkers Campus: The Participatory and People-Centered New Urban Agenda

On 19 May, the Participation Development Action Program (PDAP) and the Coalition for the Urban Poor, in collaboration with the Huairou Commission ,organized a press conference at the national Press Club on the Urban Thinkers Campus process to make residents aware of the upcoming Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC) in Dhaka through electronic and print media.

Chairman of PKSF and Dhaka School of Economics, Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, attended as Chief Guest for the opening session on the 20 May 2017 where he was joined by Professor Dr Kazi Shariful Alam, Treasurer AUST as Special Guest. Ms Masuda Faruq Ratnan Convener of Programme Committee, CUP Chaired this session where Dr. Khurshid Zabin Taufiq, Director, UDD, also present as a Special Guest presented a paper on “New Urban Agenda.”

The session on Ensuring Basic Service Delivery was chaired by Shah Md Anowar Kamal, Treasurer, CUP and Coordinator, WSSCC-B, Joining in the panel were Mr Asif Imran Khan, Advocacy Officer, Concern Worldwide while Mr SMA Muyeed, Urban Coordinator RIC presented a paper on the topic. Running parallel to this session was one on Inclusive Urban Planning chaired by Professor Abul Kalam, Jahangir Nagar University and Chairman BIP. Joining him at the panel were Dr Mainul Islam, Associate Professor Dhaka University and Mr Sujaul Islam Khan, Professor of Architecture AUST.

The second day (21 May 2017) of these discussions commenced with a discussion on Housing and Security of Tenure for the Poor, which was chaired by Mr. Mostafa Quaium Khan, Coordinator BUF. Joining him at the panel were Ms. Rabeya Sultana, Country Director, Help age International and Ms Sonia Islam, Architect and Urban Planner. Professor of Architecture AUST, Mr Sujaul Islam Khan presented his paper on this vital issue. Following this session was one on Disaster Risk and Management in the City which was chaired by Dr Khwaja Shamsul Huda, Director Programme, DAM. He was joined by Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director ICCCAD and Mr Sarder Shafiqul Alam, Senior Research Coordinator ICCCAD. Mr Mohammed Jahangir Alam presented a paper on this issue on behalf of DAM.  Ms Zahida Fizza Kabir, Executive Director- SAJIDA Foundation chaired the two final sessions of the day where Mr Uttam Kumar Saha from Practical Action presented a paper on Technology, Innovation and Opportunities for the Adolescent. Ms Kabir was joined by Ms Swapna Reza, MSS, Mr. AKM Tariqul Islam, CEO Mymensingh Municipality and Ms. Rasida Akter Jharna, Counselor (ward no. 6,7, and 8), Uttar city Corporation.

PDAP also organized three divisional meeting with local government authority, such as- Gazipur Pouroshava organized by CUP, Mymensingh Pouroshava organized by PDAP/UNDP and Rajshahi city corporation organized by  Engineers Without Borders Bangladesh organization.

At the plenary session, Quazi Baby, Executive Director of PDAP and Coordinator of UTC announced the Dhaka declaration 2017.

The Closing Session was chaired by Dr Ehsanur Rahman, Executive Director for Dhaka Ahsania Mission. Present as Chief Guest was the Honourable  Member of Parliament Ms Qazi Rosy and she was joined by Mr. AKM Tariqul Islam, CEO Mymensingh Municipality, Mr Moinuddin Ahmed, Assistant Director, The Asian Age and Mr Md Akhtaruzzaman, Country Representative of UN Habitat.

More than 200 grassroots women, men, local counselor, stakeholder, experts, Architect and urban planner attended at the Urban Thinkers Campus 2017. Their active participations and patience have made the event successful.
