UTC Report: The Importance of Land, Economy and Housing Rights for Women in Urban Areas/Cities

In the context of urbanization, gender equality and equal rights are crucial and necessary components of any society. Grassroots women play defining roles in almost every facet of urban life. They make their work felt strongly in social, political and community roles and are also active participants in planning and governance. However, their contributions receive little recognition in urban discourse.

The discrimination faced by grassroots women, including the disregard of their constitutional rights to property and urban services, hinders their recognition as integral partners in successfully tackling poverty. Grassroots women also need to be recognized as partners at the center of all local, national and global development efforts to bring about urban change such as sustainable urban development, social inclusion, ending poverty, environmentally sustainable and resilient urban development, and sustainable and inclusive urban prosperity and equal opportunities for all.
