2017 is poised to be a productive and lively year for the partners of the World Urban Campaign and the community of Urban Thinkers! Yesterday, a total of 45 Urban Thinkers Campuses (UTCs) have been approved to be held from March to November 2017, and more campuses are meant to be approved early next month. In 2016, 26 such campuses were organized, engaging some 7,847 urban thinkers before Habitat III to deliberate on a collective contribution to the Conference entitled The City We Need. This time, Campuses will be geared towards action, meant to generate action plans and commitments to implement the New Urban Agenda adopted in Quito in October 2016.


The Urban Thinkers Campus (UTC) model is an initiative of UN-Habitat’s World Urban Campaign, conceived as an open space for critical exchange between all stakeholders and partners aims to promote sustainable urbanization. It is also envisaged as a platform to advocate enlightened planning and design of our cities and propose urban solutions in addressing urbanization challenges to urban futures.

The first Urban Thinkers in Campus was organized in October 2014 on the theme ‘The City We Need’, in October 2014, in the City of Caserta, Italy. Following the World Urban Campaign Steering Committee’s instruction, From 29 June 2015 to 20 February 2016, a series of 26 Urban Thinkers Campuses have been organized around the framework of The City We Need 2.0. engaging 7,847 men and women from 124 countries and 2,137 organizations, representing fourteen constituent groups: Local and Subnational Authorities, Research and Academia, Civil Society Organizations, Grassroots Organizations, Women, Parliamentarians, Children and youth, Business and industries, Foundations and Philanthropies, Professionals, Trade Unions and Workers, Farmers, Indigenous people and the Media. The World Urban Campaign drafting committee has launched The City We Need 2.0 on 12 March 2016 which is based on the 26 UTC reports submitted to the WUC Secretariat.

Towards an action-oriented implementation of the New Urban Agenda & the City We Need

After Habitat III in Quito, the WUC steering Committee has decided to continue engaging stakeholders in the post-Habitat III era by launching Urban Thinkers Campus Phase 2 (UTC 2.0). The UTC 2.0 is envisaged to be action oriented which will focus on developing actual action plans and implementable road maps in order to implement the New Urban Agenda.

On 15 November 2016, the WUC Secretariat opened an online call for proposals to host an Urban Thinkers Campus in 2017. Up to 31 December 2017, the WUC Secretariat received 45 UTC applications, of which 14 came from the Africa region, 3 from Arab States, 8 from Latin America Countries, 7 from the Asia Pacific region, 9 from Europe and 4 from North America. All these 45 UTCs for 2017 have been approved by the WUC Standing Committee on 17 January 2017. 

Upon decision of the WUC Standing Committee, the Call for UTCs was re-opened on 11 January 2017. Up to 31 January 2017, an additional 3 UTC applications were received, of which 2 came from Europe and 1 from Latin America. Further, one of the approved UTCs has split it's events into 3 individual UTCs, bringing the total number of approved UTCs to 50 (as of 7 February 2017).

The Call for UTCs remains upon an additional 7 days, up 21 February 2017.
