The Fist Preparatory Webinar of the 15th Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS 2020)

I. Background and Objectives

Covid-19 rages across the world, plunging humanity into an abyss of misery, causing the society total lockdown and throwing the global economy into turmoil, and is considered as a once-in-a-century public health crisis and ecological security crisis. The international community must take decisive action to meet the challenges, promote a full and inclusive economic and social recovery, and accelerate an aggressive transformation towards sustainable development.

The pandemic, being projected to become a “new normal”, is an enormous shock to the original rules and order, and calls for new and urgent need for changes in buildings, communities and cities. With all kinds of measures being taken for social distancing and infection control, diversified business models and platforms such as home office, online business, education and life services, are emerging and getting increasingly popular. In this context, how to bring into full play the important role of buildings and communities in fighting the epidemic in an effective way? What changes will occur to their design, layout and function? How can architectural design draw inspiration from nature in order to better adapt to changes? How to balance the elements of "free building plane" and "flexible building space" to improve the space utilization and sustainability of buildings?

How can cities improve their resilience and mitigate the impact of current and future epidemics and other disasters? Confronting challenges in epidemic prevention and control, how will cities improve their efficiency, inclusiveness and sustainability? What changes will occur in terms of urban planning and form, built environment, infrastructure, energy structure, transportation and mobility, public space, and social equity? What interventions can be put in place in these areas?

Against this background, the first preparatory webinar of the 15th Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements (GFHS 2020) will be organized on the morning of July 10th (Central European Time) to address urgent issues centered around "Strategies for fighting epidemics: adaptable buildings and resilient cities”.

Well-known experts will share insights on and provide an in-depth look at, from the perspective of planning, design, operation and management, how buildings and cities can improve their safety, flexibility, adaptability, resilience and sustainability, so as to achieve the goal of meaningful transformation and revitalization in all shocks and crises. The webinar is designed to inspire practical solutions and actions in support of better recovery and sustainability changes, and to contribute to the success of the 15th Annual Session of Global Forum on Human Settlements.
