Climate Action:

Maria Perbellini is the Dean of the School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) at the New York Institute of Technology. She is the co-founder of Pongratz Perbellini Architects, an award-winning firm internationally recognized and widely published.Under her leadership, SoAD has been at the forefront of public interest and community design, working on multi-scalar projects and climate-responsive proposals to engage marginalized communities and vulnerable environments affected by natural disasters, social and economic inequities.

Examples include: The Italian Virtual Pavilion; the R-Cubed, Best Practices for Community-based and Multidisciplinary, Comprehensive Disaster ResponseHousing Density: From Tenements to Towers; Modular Infrastructure Construction in Río Piedras, Puerto Rico; Building Resilient Communities in Harlem, NY; Emergency Cores post-hurricane recovery, Puerto Rico; Refugee Housing in Germany;  and Hurricane Sandy Displaced Housing in NYC, among other initiatives. She has focused on collaborations and partnerships: Politecnico di Milano, Politecnico di Bari, IUAV, PUC Rio, UIC Barcelona, Istituto Italiano di Cultura New York, Consulate General of Denmark in New York, Institute for Future Human Habitat-Tsinghua Shenzhen IGS (in progress), ENEL, Peccioli Research Center, New York City, AIANY Planning and Urban Design, among others).

Global issues of environmental awareness, climate change, sustainable solutions, diversity, inclusion e social responsibility are infusing curricula, lecture series, events and initiatives (, have become part of design studio projects and specialized master’s, have infused virtual conversations and stimulated symposia and panels (The Future of Cities: Urban Regeneration in a Time of Crisis; Design Innovation: Resilient Cities Learning For Science; Critical Density: Health, Ecology, Economy & Equity; among others).

Emerging technologies


Maria Perbellini is a member of the NYC Architecture Biennial Advisory Board. The 2022 NYCAB theme, “Interdependen-city, …”will examine how architecture, design and urbanism activate structural transformation in a globalized world”.


She is also an invited member of the Italian Pavilion Advisory Board at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2021, and one of the Creative Directors of the Virtual Italian Pavilion.  17th International Architecture Venice Biennale 2021;

Maria Perbellini was an invited speaker at a Forum on Sustainability on 10.21.2021, promoted by the Embassy of Italy in the United States. Organized by Istituto Italiano di Cultura in New York and La Voce di New York on the occasion of the 5th Edition of the Sustainable Development Festival promoted by Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile (ASviS) and in view of COP26.
