Tree S.R.L: Catania Urban Thinkers Campus - TourismHACK

Talent, innovation and social effect at the service of the tourism industry.

This was the focus of the Catania Urban Thinkers Campus. The event, organised by tree and TIM WCAP, took place in Catania from 5 to 7 July. The aim was to talk about the importance of this branch and his evolution, together with innovation opportunities through debates and a 30-hour hackathon.

Following the format of the Urban Thinkers Campus, created by the World Urban Campaign of the United Nation, the days in TIM WCAP Catania were full of workshops and meetings.

Everything has been organised under “The Future of the City” project. Tree and TIM WCAP's partnership has led to this project in order to support the growth of the territory promoting the digital development and new solutions for Smart Cities.

The event also belongs to the activities of the European cooperation project Italia-Malta ENISIE, which has the aim to create a favorable ecosystem for the development of social business in the Mediterranean area.

Many events on July 6. “The City of the future”, for example, has seen international guests, associations, startup and young talents discussing about eco-friendly and intelligent cities, new regulations regarding social company and public funding for businesses in the South. The event has been moderated by Mirko Viola (Head of Business & Community Development tree), with the speeches of Antonio Perdichizzi (CEO and Founder of tree), Patrizia Rizzi (Invitalia), Roi Chiti (Leader Global Advocacy Platforms Advocacy and Partnerships Branch UN-Habitat), Joseph Sammut (CEO Malta Enterprise), Mauro Pace Parascandalo (Executive Director of Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector) and Rosario Sapienza (Impact Hub Siracusa).

Michele Spalletta (coordinator of the European project for tree) has introduced in this occasion the online platform Koinè, one of the goal of the program ENISIE to simplify the connections among realities of the Mediterranean.

In the afternoon the European project has led to a comparison between Sicilian realities and Maltese partners. In the focus the TourismHack, the 3 days competition of ideas among young talents. More than 50 participants (developers, designers, experts, business and marketing lovers) tried to answer to one challenge: “Tourism Mobility” to improve the accessible tourism or “Retail & Customer Journey” to simplify the shopping experience of the tourists improving their experience.

The panel, made up of TIM-JOL Catania representatives (Marco Sapienza), UN-Habitat (Roi Chiti), Malta Enterprise (Joseph Sammut), Malta Council for Voluntary Sector (Mauro Pace Parascandalo) and Impact Hub Siracusa, has decided the winners of the competition.
For them the prize was a € 10.000 voucher Amazon:

- Unni Emu, the digital solution that creates a meeting between "solo traveller" and residents. A sort of gamification: more visited places more points for shopping.
- Nico, the app dedicated to blind and partially-sighted customers that offers an interactive guide that communicates thanks to special voice commands.
- Snapack, the online platform to send souvenirs and other products purchased on the road directly at home, booking the shipment directly in the store.
