Introduction of 4-H Nepal
Introduction
The 4-H Nepal has its interventions in youth, youth entrepreneurship, agriculture, policy advocacy on youth empowerment, democracy and good governance. Of four 'H's that are linked to 4-H, the first H indicates Head (managing and thinking skills), the second H indicates Heart (relating and caring skills), the third H indicates Hands (working and giving skills) and the forth H indicates Health (living and being skilled). 
-H Nepal helps youth to learn and grow through the national process of development by which it helps in building competence, confidence, connection, compassion and characters of youth. Likewise, the 4-H Nepal encourages youth to participate in the activities that emphasize on 4-H's "learning by doing" philosophy of youth development. 
The major approaches applied in the development of youth in 4-H are: i) Positive Youth Development (PYD), ii) Youth-Adult Partnership (YAP), iii) Inspiring, Empowering and Engaging (IEE) and iv) Farming Therapy. To ensure participation of youth and people of the marginalized and vulnerable community from grassroots to national level activities, the 4-H Nepal is partnering with the Government of Nepal, national and international non-governmental organizations, private sector, civil society organizations, networks and alliances. 
One of the main working areas is ''Empowering Youth in the Agro-entrepreneurship'' in a rural area of Nepal. 4-H Nepal organized The 1st Asian Agriculture Summit and Expo 2019 and the National Conference on Youth Participation Agriculture Entrepreneurship in 2016 and 2017 in Kathmandu, Nepal. And 4-H Nepal organized State Youth Agriculture Conference and Metro Agriculture Camps and much more programs in the rural area of Nepal. 
4-H Nepal partnering and participated in international cThe First Global 4 H network summit was held in South Korea in 2014 and the second summit was held in Canada in 2017 and 4-H Nepal leads a workshop in the summit. sharing the experience and presented paper at Global 4-H Convention 2019 and 4-H International Seminar in South Korea. And participated at The 3rd Asia 4-H Network Conference 2019 on International Conference on Youth Promotion and Development in Thailand. 
 
Empowering youth in the Agriculture in Nepal
Agriculture Digital Discourse: My Dream, My prosperity
During the COVID-19 The 4-H Nepal organized virtual webinar on Youth employment, Agricultural promotion and Youth migration and much more. It is connected by Zoom any love by the facebook page. After COVID-19 4- H Nepal organized 30 episodes and discussed with policy maker, migrant worker, agro economist, agriculture expert, entrepreneurs and Government of Nepal. It is open digital dialogue among young and experts. And identified main challenges, problems and solution for manage COVID -19 crises and create new jobs for youth and other employee in agriculture sector.
4-H Nepal raised voice of rescue to international migrant for return back their home. Specially 4- H Nepal advocacy of Nepali migrant in India with Government of Nepal. 4-H Nepal using social media for COVID-19 awareness campaign and disseminate related information and government notice to young people.
 
The Asian Agriculture Summit and Expo 2019
4-H Nepal, in collaboration with partners, organized ‘The Asian Agriculture Summit and Exhibition (AASE) 2019’ at Hotel Himalaya, Lalitpur from August 11-13th, 2019. The summit was organized with the motto to revitalize the Agricultural youth entrepreneurship in Asia. The Summit aims to promote empowering youth in agriculture, Agriculture base entrepreneurship sustainable development with agro-ecology through exchanging knowledge and experiences of youth participation and building networks for collective progress. The summit provides valuable feedback and obtain supports from academics and policymakers. Youths from various parts of the country converged in Kathmandu and showcased their experiences, innovations and visions; discussed on the policy environment that encourage them in entrepreneurship.
 
The summit helped to establish networks, platforms and mechanisms of youth entrepreneurs for the collective and collaborative endeavors to create fostering environment for youths in agriculture.  The summit consisted of a mixture of oral and poster sessions. It aimed to promote interaction among participants, and communications such as experience sharing, networking among experts and stall exhibition. The conference brought together over 130 participants from different countries such as China, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ghana, UK and Ireland
 
Policy advocacy and Influencing
The 4-H Nepal organized two national-level youth-agro entrepreneurship symposiums with the objectives of encouraging involvement of youth in agriculture, build a network of youth and share ideas and experiences of experts, farmers, entrepreneurs, policy makers on agriculture and agricultural entrepreneurship. The symposiums were able to inject concept of youth entrepreneurship in the minds of policy-makers, youth, government agencies, donor agencies and students. The symposiums initiated dialogues among them to discuss the problems, issues, needs, challenges and opportunities of agriculture sector and agriculture entrepreneurship.
 
Humanitarian support
The 4-Nepal and its volunteers are actively involved in providing humanitarian support in different parts of Nepal. 4-H Nepal in coordination with government agencies and like-mind humanitarian organization provides rescue, relief and reconstruction in case of any natural disasters in Nepal. The 4 H Nepal massively provided relief, immediate support and reconstruction related work immediately after the massive earthquake of 2015. Many people were benefited by the relief, rescue and reconstruction campaign launched by 4 H Nepal in connection with the earthquake and its survivors.
 
Promotion of volunteerism
The 4-H Nepal has been established as a pioneer organization in Nepal to promote the concept of volunteerism among youth in regards to providing humanitarian support and cooperation during the natural calamities and crises in the country. It also mobilizes volunteers for awareness, community development and promotion of life-skills among youth. The 4 H Nepal capacitates the volunteers with regular training, mentoring, coaching, exchange visit and experience sharing sessions.
 
Contribution to nation building
The 4-H Nepal, since its inception in Nepal, has been contributing to the building of the nation. To achieve this, the 4-H Nepal has organized several awareness campaigns and capacity building trainings to the youth, provided them life-skills and facilitated them with the concept of democracy, good governance, free and fair election and their mobilization in the observation of the local, provincial and federal elections held in Nepal. The trained and motivated youth and target groups, who are associated with 4 H Nepal, have been transferring their knowledge and skills in their community. Likewise, 4 H Nepal also encourages the experts and volunteers associated with its network to contribute when there is any complexity and crisis in the country.  
 
Promotion of agro-entrepreneurship
The 4-H Nepal has been promoting agro-entrepreneurship through capacity development events, advocacy efforts, regular campaigns, interactions, dialogues and sharing events among policy-makers, government agencies, social workers, youth, farmers, students, and. The 4-H Nepal conducts national and international level conferences on agro-entrepreneurship, regularly engaged in policy and advocacy for the promotion of agro-entrepreneurship, forms the networks of youth for their joint actions in agro-entrepreneurship and awards farmers, who have significant contribution in agriculture.
 
Youth capacity-building
A Training of Trainers (ToT) entitled 'Youth Empowerment through Agriculture-based Entrepreneurship Development' was organized to 48 young entrepreneurs in Ramechhap from March 17 to 27, 2016. The training provided skills to farmers on making business plan and financial plan. The trainees, who are now actively involved in agriculture, have been transferring their knowledge and skills in their community. Tiffany A. Drape, senior research associate of Virginia Tech, USA facilitated the training which was conducted with support from Winrock International. 
 
National Agro Conference
To attract youth in agriculture and facilitate them to develop their entrepreneurship skills, 4 H Nepal organized two national-level conferences in 2016 and 2018. The conferences were able to provide the youth about status of agriculture in Nepal and provided them the essential ideas and skills to engage in agriculture. Experts made presentation on different themes, successful entrepreneurs shared their stories and delivered their motivational speeches, parallel sessions on government policies, marketing, networking and challenges were presented. The conferences were organized in coordination with the government agencies and like-mined organizations among 400 youth across Nepal. High level government representatives including Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, federal and provincial ministers, members of the federal and provincial parliament, ambassadors, representatives of UN agencies, among others, attended the conferences.
 
Agricultural Policy dialogue
Policy dialogue on youth and agriculture was organized in Kathmandu to discuss about status of agriculture in Nepal and possible involvement and engagement of youth in agriculture. Scholars and experts of agriculture, representatives Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) and the National Planning Commission made their separate presentation in the policy dialogue and encouraged youth for their active involvement in agriculture. They highlighted the need to make reforms in policy, legal frameworks and formulating new laws as per the federal structure of the country.
Compost fertilizer training
The 4-H Nepal IAAS section, Tribhuwan University, has been providing trainings on agriculture and farming to the students of different schools in Lamjung district. It taught students about the practical methodology of preparing compost fertilizers and also made demonstration on making the compost fertilizers.
 
School Gardening Training
It was conducted to instruct students and teachers of four different schools from Lamjung about the importance and essence of the school gardening and its different aspects. The training served as a learning and sharing platform to the students. They learned how they can cope with the natural environment. More than 250 students benefited from the school gardening training. Students from Adarsha Bal Higher Secondary School, Sayapatri English Boarding School, Insight Vision Academy and Tribhuvan Higher Secondary School attended the training.
  1. Volunteerism
The 4-H Nepal has its major interventions in developing volunteerism among youth and mobilizing volunteers in humanitarian work; creating awareness on civic education; conducting election observation, cleanliness and sanitation campaigns. Volunteers were mobilized during the 2015 earthquake, during all three elections held in 2017 and in the Bagmati Cleanliness Campaign. A total of 567 volunteers were mobilized for rescue, relief and reconstruction after the 2015 earthquake.
 
Voter Education
One-day orientation was given to 56 district voter educators of 7 districts for the local elections at Bardibas, Mahottari district on September 11, 2017. After the orientation, they were divided into four groups and started e-rickshaw voter education campaign for four days from September 12, 2017. Each group conducted the campaign in at least four places. The 4-H Nepal reached out among 84 communities and 4501 voters in seven districts of Terai during the local elections.
 
Youth Dialogue for Social Harmony
The 4-H Nepal took initiatives to hold a dialogue by inviting youth affiliated to different political parties and social sector to discuss how youth can take a lead in maintaining social harmony, peace and brotherhood in terai at a time when tension was increasing in terai as people were agitating to ensure their rights in the constitution. There was a kind of vacuum in the politics as attempts for dialogue were not initiated to minimize the tension.
 
Social media campaign
The 4-H Nepal has its facebook and twitter page to widely disseminate its campaigns, programs, activities and events. The facebook page is used to make live dissemination of events like youth conferences and policy dialogues which are organized by 4-H Nepal and its sister wings. Likewise, IAAS also has facebook, twitter pages to highlight its intervention and programs. The IAAS has its separate agriculture and youth pages to share informative messages and opportunities for youth.
 
Construction of school and buildings
The 4-H Nepal mobilized 5 hundred 67 volunteers to edifice the temporary shelters, schools and heritage sites. The volunteers contributed their valuable time by focusing schools, private houses, toilets and communities for 56 days. Eighty volunteers built 8 class rooms of the Durbar High School in Kathmandu. Likewise, they constructed 14 damaged houses in Sitapaila, Kathmandu and handed over the houses to the owners. The 4-H volunteers, along with the APF, cleared debris at Changunarayan Temple for four days.
